Sossusvlei
On the highest Dunes on Earth
Two steps forward, one step back – climbing a dune as high as a mountain is more exhausting than expected. But all the sweat and exertion is amply rewarded by the incredible view: far below in the valley lies the clay pan of Sossusvlei, surrounded by the highest dunes on earth. They block the seasonal Tsauchab River on its way to the coast. But the pan rarely fills up with water – only after good rains in the river’s catchment area. Those who are lucky enough to come across the contrast of a body of water in the midst of a sand sea will remember this picture forever.

Sossusvlei is situated right in the middle of the dune Namib, the sand sea which covers south-western Namibia between the Kuiseb River east of Walvis Bay and the tar road from Aus to Lüderitz. The entire area is part of the national Namib Naukluft Park. Visitor access is limited to a few places only.

  Experience Sossusvlei
The entry point to the national park and the nature conservation office are at Sesriem. From there a 60 km stretch of tar road leads to a car park in the shade of big old camel thorn trees. Because of thick sand in places a four-wheel drive vehicle is needed for the last 5 km to Sossusvlei. However, a shuttle service is available for those arriving in city cars.
