  Cloudbursts in the Desert - 02.03.06
Guests and hosts could hardly believe it: torrents of rain poured from the heavy clouds in the sky – and this in the middle of the Namib Desert! In January 44 mm of rain were recorded in the park area, in February even 141 mm; usually it amounts to something like perhaps 50 mm during the entire year. “The desert is green, green, green”, the Manageress of Namib Desert Lodge, Anja von Reeken, reports joyfully. Since grazing is plentiful, game animals like Gemsbok and Springbok which migrate between Gondwana Namib Park and neighbouring Namib Naukluft Park have moved to the area in large numbers.
 

   

Many tourists had adventurous experiences due to flooding rivers.

The flip side of the coin: the seasonal rivers came down in full flood and thus turned some roads into a cul-de-sac for a while. Several guests of Gondwana Namib Park were forced to make an unplanned stop and wait for the floods to subside.
A tractor, transporting electricity poles, got stuck in the Tsondab River and was swept away by the raging waters; luckily the driver was able to escape in time.

  The whole of Namibia is over the moon about an exceptionally rewarding rainy season. Many of the ephemeral rivers flooded and thereby blocked quite a few tourists on their way to the next accommodation facility. The country’s dams – vital for the supply of drinking water – are full, some of them literally to the brim. Everywhere the desert shows off its green finery...
